Life is weird
That's really all there is to it. It's unpredictable, funny, horrible, amazing, quirky, and full of the most incredible surprises.
Here is an account of something catalogued under AMAZING and INCREDIBLE SURPRISE:
At church yesterday I got my customary doting by a guy friend of mine who has the biggest most obvious crush on me. He's a good guy, he knows I've got a boyfriend, and he knows that I know about his crush. But this high school sophomore kid is still one of my good friends and always funny to hang with. At times his adoring attention makes me feel bad, because I really want him to have a good relationship with a good gal some day (but odds are that gal isn't gonna be me) and I don't wanna distract him from that. But for now he and I are simply good friends, and I guess I'll time take care of the rest.
But being on his mind all the time has its big payoffs, and not just in flattery.
I was in the lobby not 60 seconds when I feel a body purposely bump into me; as I staggered upright he smiled at me with glowing eyes. Greeting him, he began to urge me away from the conversation I had gotten into with one of my favorite New Life members that I rarely get to see, but he said it was important. With a lot of "ums" and hand gestures filling in the information gaps, he told me that I came up during the conversation he had with his father that morning in the car. Off-hand his dad had asked him if he knew anyone interested in writing and journalism, from the articles to the publishing.
Enter Heather's name. EXCITEMENT. As we finally caught up with his dad you could feel the mutual excitement coursing between us; my friend stood to the side grinning as his father's and my eyes locked in the thrills of two puzzle pieces clicking together, too perfect to be questioned as an accident. I shook his hand, gave him my email address, my eyes glowing like my admirer's do when he catches first sight of me. Laughing for no good reason and with extra bounce in my step, I stumbled into my father's car, launching into my excitement.
The most I can gather from that short encounter with the dad is that I'll be learning how to publish a small newspaper, will need to recruite other people to help me fill the pages, and will eventually be given the reins of the newspaper to allow the dad more time for his other tasks as I run the publication.
Wait, wait, give me a second to breathe, I'm hyperventilating...
The dad works for a church in a not-at-all well-to-do neighborhood; the ministry is known for keeping people out of jail based almost solely on the donations people give to the church. He suggested the idea to the staff to start a newspaper to (1) let the donators know where their money is going and what good it's doing and (2) let the neighborhood adhere to a ray of goodness in the town to start encouraging more of a sense of community...a community that's doing something good. Some weekend he's going to take me down and introduce me around and show me the gears behind it all.
OH. MY. GOD. What else in life could I possibly want?! Especially with that kind of education and with my dreams and at the age I'm at and.....??!!???!?! I want to bust at the seams of my skin and send all my happiness raining down on the state of Ohio because I've got plenty to go around and not enough space in this body to put it. It's gonna be hard but I'll love it. It's gonna be frustrating and demanding....
.....but my goodness will I love it.
Thank you for your doting affections my admirer! I owe you BIG time.
